Abstract

This study aims to propose and evaluate a pedagogical prompt design framework based on structured problem-solving thinking to develop creative thinking and enhance cognitive engagement in learners when learning with generative artificial intelligence. The novelty of this research lies in transforming the principles of creative problem-solving theory into pedagogically sound prompt design principles, guiding learners to interact with AI as a cognitive support partner rather than simply generating answers. The study was conducted using a semi-experimental pre-measurement-post-measurement design on a group of students, combined with design-based research methods; data were collected from learning products, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The results show that using structured prompts enhances thinking depth, increases cognitive engagement, and encourages learners to actively analyze, evaluate, and self-regulate during their interaction with AI. The findings affirm the role of pedagogical prompts as a form of cognitive scaffolding, while also suggesting a new approach in designing AI-integrated teaching activities and training AI-based competencies in education.
