Abstract

Verbal abuse in school has been identified as a commonplace component. Although it has negative consequences for the individual’s relationship and well-being, little attention has been diverted towards verbal abuse of children from researchers, educators as well as society. This article presents the current situation of verbal abuse of secondary school students at Thua Thien Hue province. 708 students from two secondary schools and two high schools in Thua Thien Hue province participated in answering the questionnaire. The survey shows that students employed verbal abuse at different levels. They often situated the most intense use of “use insults to soften the stubbornness”, “tell them they are unreasonable”, “lose my temper and say rather strong things to them”... There are differences in verbal abuse in terms of gender and age. In order to effectively verbal abuse prevention and intervention strategies, educators must partner with families and communities.
