Abstract

Depression is a common mental health issue among cancer patients, in which social support is considered a crucial protective factor. This study aims to assess the current status of social support and depression among cancer patients at the Oncology Center - Hue Central Hospital, as well as to examine the relationship between these two factors. A total of 102 patients participated in the study, with a predominance of male participants (65.7%). Data were collected using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and were analyzed using Cronbach's alpha reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, and Pearson’s correlation analysis. The results showed that cancer patients at the Oncology Center of Hue Central Hospital reported a high level of social support; 61.8% of the patients experienced depression ranging from mild to severe; and the level of social support was negatively correlated with patients’ depression. These findings not only contribute empirical evidence for the association between social support and mental health among cancer patients but also underscore the role of social interventions in preventing and mitigating depression in this vulnerable population.

Tóm tắt

Trầm cảm là một vấn đề sức khỏe tâm thần phổ biến ở bệnh nhân ung thư, trong đó hỗ trợ xã hội được xem là yếu tố bảo vệ quan trọng. Nghiên cứu này nhằm mục đích đánh giá thực trạng hỗ trợ xã hội và trầm cảm ở bệnh nhân ung thư tại Trung tâm Ung bướu, Bệnh viện Trung ương Huế, đồng thời khảo sát mối quan hệ giữa hai yếu tố này. Tổng cộng có 102 bệnh nhân tham gia nghiên cứu, tỷ lệ nam giới chiếm ưu thế (65.7%). Dữ liệu được thu thập bằng Thang đo Đa chiều về Hỗ trợ Xã hội Nhận thức (MSPSS) và Thang đánh giá Trầm cảm Beck (BDI), sau đó xử lý bằng phân tích độ tin cậy Cronbach's alpha, thống kê mô tả và tương quan Pearson. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy, bệnh nhân ung thư tại Trung tâm Ung bướu, Bệnh viện Trung ương Huế có mức độ hỗ trợ xã hội cao; 61.8% bệnh nhân có mức độ trầm cảm từ nhẹ đến nặng; mức độ hỗ trợ xã hội có tương quan nghịch với trầm cảm của bệnh nhân. Những phát hiện này không chỉ góp phần cung cấp bằng chứng thực nghiệm cho mối liên hệ giữa hỗ trợ xã hội và sức khỏe tâm thần ở bệnh nhân ung thư, mà còn nhấn mạnh vai trò của can thiệp xã hội trong việc phòng ngừa và giảm thiểu trầm cảm ở nhóm đối tượng đặc biệt này.
