Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of bullying (both traditional bullying and cyberbullying) among middle and high school students. A total of 1,582 students from 23 middle and high schools in the provinces of Thua Thien Hue, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Hanoi, Dong Nai, and Ho Chi Minh City participated in the study and completed a questionnaire that included demographic questions and the Cyberbullying and Victimization Questionnaire by Campfield (2008). The results showed that for traditional bullying, 3.1% of students self-reported as perpetrators, 21.2% as victims, and 15.9% as both perpetrators and victims, while 947 students (59.9%) reported no involvement. There was no gender difference in traditional bullying behavior and victimization; however, high school students were more likely to engage in traditional bullying than middle school students. Regarding cyberbullying, 1.2% of students self-reported as perpetrators, 25.5% as victims, and 5.9% as both perpetrators and victims, while 1,066 students (76.4%) reported no involvement. Male students were more likely to engage in bullying than female students. However, there was no gender difference in cyberbullying victimization. Middle school students were more likely to be cyberbullied, while high school students were more likely to engage in cyberbullying. The study contributes additional empirical data on traditional and cyberbullying among middle and high school students.
